Covid-19 or novel coronavirus has brought the world down to its knees. The rates of people getting infected with this pandemic are increasing exponentially. Governments across the world are trying their best to keep people safe and away from the disease. The WHO declared it as a pandemic which has also elevated the panic level of the normal people. Currently, a vaccine or drug is not available for COVID-19.

Community-based interventions such as school dismissals, event cancellations, social distancing, and creating employee plans to work remotely can help slow the spread of COVID-19.  Individuals can practice everyday prevention measures like frequent hand washing, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes.

Staying clean and sanitizing yourself as well as your surroundings is a strongly adviced measure to contain the spread of the virus. That being said, there is something that we all tend to overlook. Our mobile phones.

They are our constant companions, our mobile phones go with us whereever we go. They are also breeding ground for germs. Mobiles get exposed to all sorts of environmental conditions, also we are constatnly using them.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19, the only thing that we have been constantly hearing is not not touch the face constantly and wash or sanitize our hands at a regular inteval. Our mobile phones are also in constant contact with our face and hands. And it is imperative to keep them sanitized as well. Which leads us to the question of:

How to clean clean and sanitize your phones without damaging it?

Mobile phones are our constant companions as well as a breeding ground for germs. The outbreak of coronavirus or Covid-19 demands that we constatnly wash our hands and do not touch our face as well. Mobile phones are however mostly undermined or forgotten by many, perhaps we have been so much used to it that our mobiles has become a part of us.

Cleaning or sanitizing our mobile phones at a regular interval (constatntly) is as necessary as washing out hands. However, it isnt as easy as it sounds and many people are confused as to how to clean or sanitize mobile phones without damaging them.

The first choice of many would be to use hand sanitizers. However, the use of any liquid to clean electronic devices is ill-advised. Liquids, even thicker liquids such as hand sanitizer, can easily penetrate through small cracks and crevices in the case and enter the interior of the device where they can cause permanent damage and electrical shorts. In a worst case scenario, they could cause a short across the battery within the device and induce an electrical fire.

In addition to the risk of causing damage to the interior of the device, (caustic) liquids can cause permanent damage to the display screens. Many display screens have coating applied to them which help to eliminate things such as screen glare/ These coatings can quickly break down under the influence of caustic agents, including the concentrated isopropyl alcohol used in hand sanitizers. In the best case scenario, this coating is removed completely, resulting in the loss of that coatings function. In the worst case scenario, the removal of the coating is patchy resulting in areas of the screen which react differently than other areas of the screen and even visible peeling of the screen coating off the screen.

The best way to sanitize or clean your phone

Any disinfectant wipe (lysol etc) can easily get ride of the grime and bacteria on your mobile phone. It is an easy fix as well and many of us would be tempted to use these wipes as they are handy and user friendly.

But fight this instinct off from every single phone loving cell of your body. DO NOT even think about it. The chemicals used in those wipes are harsh and can have a corrosive effect on the body of the mobile phone as well as the screen.

The best and possible the easiest way to sanitize your phone without damaging it is to use UV light. Ultraviolet lights can kill bacteria and disinfect your phone with just a few minutes (6-8 minutes) inside a doll-sized tanning bed.

These UV devices are readily available in the market and online as well, soapbox for example is one such devices and it is available for $49.99 in Amazon.
